Once you accept the premise that a sophisticated Excel model is already a backend service, a few important implications follow.
Domain experts become API publishers. The people who understand the business logic best (actuaries, engineers, financial analysts) can publish and maintain their own APIs without involving a development team for every change. When pricing assumptions change, the actuary makes the update in Excel and republishes. The API updates with it. No ticket, no sprint, no waiting.
Legacy models become assets, not liabilities. Organizations often feel embarrassed about their dependence on Excel. There is a common narrative that eventually moving off spreadsheets is an inevitable modernization step, as though Excel dependence is a technical debt problem to be solved. But if those spreadsheets contain correct, validated, sophisticated business logic that domain experts have refined over years, the goal should not be to replace them. Compliance becomes easier, not harder. One of the standard objections to relying on Excel in production is the audit trail problem. But that premise is worth examining. The question is not whether code is more powerful than Excel. It is whether rewriting correct, validated, domain-expert-maintained business logic into code, with all the time, risk, and ongoing maintenance cost that involves, actually makes the application better. In most cases, the honest answer is that it makes the application more expensive and more fragile, at least in the short and medium term.
The Excel model is not the liability. The assumption that it has to be replaced before it can be useful is the liability.
